NTPC wants to make its energy portfolio greener by adding renewable energy sources to its production capacity.
The company has a commissioned capacity of 2,962 MW of renewable energy projects, according to the company's website.
The scope of the green methanol project will include capturing carbon from NTPC power plants and converting it into methanol for a wide range of applications, including transportation.
Methanol is being considered as an alternative fuel for shipping to help reduce emissions.
The project “will significantly contribute to India's energy transition,” NTPC director (commercial) C.K Mondal says.
