Although the immediate impact that this small-scale battery-driven vessel will have on global greenhouse gas emissions might be limited, the vessel holds significance as it provides crucial technical and operational insights that can inform the development of larger-scale battery-driven vessels in the future.

The vessel e-Crea is fully powered by batteries charged at shore-based facilities at Keihin Dock’s Koyasu Shipyard.

Built by Keihin Dock, a shipbuilding subsidiary of NYK, it will assist with the docking and undocking of tugboats at the same shipyard.

The data and insights gained from e-Crea’s construction and operation will contribute to the development of an electric-propulsion tugboat, set to be completed by December 2026, according to NYK.
