Japanese classification society ClassNK has granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to the shipping firm Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and its partners for the design of an ammonia-capable ammonia bunkering vessel.

A project partner, LMG Marine, which is a subsidiary of the shipbuilding firm Seatrium, provided the vessel design.

Tokyo-based engineering firm IHI Power Systems will supply ammonia dual-fuel engine for the vessel.

The vessel will also feature a bunkering boom provided by equipment manufacturer TB Global Technologies. The bunkering boom has an emergency release system that allows instant disconnection between the ammonia bunkering vessel and the fuel receiving vessel during emergencies.

NYK and the project partners are yet to decide on where the vessel will be built, an NYK spokesperson told ENGINE.
