NYK claims that the vessel will be the “world's first ammonia-fuelled vessel for commercial use.”
The conversion of the LNG-powered tugboat to run on ammonia was completed by NYK in partnership with engineering firm IHI Power Systems and classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK). The conversion took place at the NYK Group's Keihin Dock in Japan.
This modification project was part of the Green Innovation Fund initiative, supported by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), NYK adds.
