The Mediterranean Sea has been designated as a sulphur Emission Control Area (ECA) under MARPOL Annex VI Regulation 14 from May 2025.
This regulation caps the sulphur content of bunker fuels used within the region at 0.10%, unless vessels are fitted with exhaust gas cleaning systems, such as scrubbers.
The limit effectively restricts non-scrubber-equipped vessels to using ULSFO or LSMGO for compliance.
Scrubber-fitted vessels can continue to bunker HSFO or VLSFO if their systems can cut down sulphur emissions to 0.10%.
Orim Energy already offers physical deliveries in the ARA region and Malta. It is now expanding its operations to Gibraltar, which it describes as “the largest bunkering hub in the new Med-ECA zone.”
It offers ULSFO, VLSFO, LSMGO and HSFO for bunkering, according to its website. Deliveries in the region will be carried out via barges and tankers.
