Orlen starts operations at Gdańsk marine transshipment facility

Polish refiner Orlen has commissioned its Marine Transshipment Terminal at the Gdańsk refinery, marking the start of operations with the loading of MGO from the refinery and the delivery of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) for biofuel production.

Located on the Martwa Wisła River, the terminal is directly connected to Orlen's Gdańsk refinery, allowing cargoes to be loaded and discharged without the need for intermediate transport.

The facility features a 380-metre quay with two identical berths, enabling it to accommodate two vessels simultaneously. Each berth can handle vessels of up to 10,000 dwt. Equipped with four automated loading arms per berth, the terminal can transfer cargo in both directions at rates of up to 500 cbm/hour.

During its first year of operation, the Marine Transshipment Terminal is expected to handle around 100 vessel calls and approximately 500,000 mt of products. Its annual throughput capacity is projected to reach approximately 1.8–2 million mt.

“The new facility will reduce logistics costs, increase supply flexibility, lessen reliance on road and rail transport and reduce dependence on external port facilities in Gdańsk and Gdyniam,” Orlen said.
