Phoenix Reisen’s cruise ship retrofitted with shore power connection

German cruise operator Phoenix Reisen's cruise ship, MS Amera, has been retrofitted with a shore power connection system.

Shore power, also known as "cold ironing," provides electrical power to ships while they are docked at ports, allowing them to connect to the local electrical grid instead of running their onboard engines to power essential systems.

Swiss automation company ABB carried out the retrofit. ABB has also retrofitted the vessel with an onboard DC power system. It uses direct current (DC) for electrical power distribution, improving efficiency, and reducing energy loss.
