The US Coast Guard has reopened the Fort McHenry Federal Channel after an explosion on Monday, allowing movement of vessels into and out of the Port of Baltimore.

The shipping channel ceased operations after an explosion aboard the bulk carrier W Sapphire while it was passing through the Patapsco River, the port authority said on social media platform X.

The coal-laden cargo ship, carrying 23 crew members, had departed Baltimore on 18 August en route to East Africa.

The explosion happened near the site of last year’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse, which was caused by a collision with a containership.
