The 8-megawatt (MW) shore power system is installed at the Hutchison Ports-operated Barcelona Europe South Terminal (BEST) container terminal. The system will allow two shore-power capable vessels to connect simultaneously, according to the Barcelona port authority.

The pilot testing will last for two years. During this trial phase, the port authority plans to install a total of 92 shore power units and then increase the number of units in the third year.

The use of shore power supply is expected to reduce at least 2,500 mt/year of CO2 emissions from ships arriving at the Port of Barcelona during the two-year trial period, the port authority claims.
