Proposed Moroccan green ammonia plant eyes bunkering

Moroccan start-up ORNX Green Hydrogen is planning to build a green ammonia plant in Morocco's Laâyoune region.

The plant is expected to have a production capacity of around 560,000 mt/year of green ammonia produced from green hydrogen.

The project will be designed to integrate renewable power generation, green hydrogen production and ammonia synthesis at a single facility.

Global engineering firm KBR will provide technology licensing and carry out pre-front-end engineering design (Pre-FEED) work to assess the project's feasibility. The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) is financially supporting the study.

The project will benefit from the region’s “abundant renewable resources and strategic access to port infrastructure," KBR said.

“The development aligns with increasing demand for clean fuels and sustainable feedstocks across the fertilizer, maritime and industrial sectors,” it added.

The green ammonia could be supplied to the domestic market as well as exported to international markets, according to KBR. The timeline of the project has not yet been announced.
