The hydrogen-storage vessel, called H2Leo, has two separate tanks with a total storage capacity of 300-600 mt of hydrogen, with a potential expansion capacity of 2,000 mt.

Construction of the vessel will begin in 2025, according to ABS.

“The unit is designed for various hydrogen supply chains and applications, including bunkering for the maritime sector, intermittent/buffer storage for green hydrogen production, and long-duration storage for excess renewable energy,” said ABS at the Nor-Shipping Exhibition in Oslo, Norway.

ABS chief executive Christopher J. Wiernicki said hydrogen storage and transportation at sea must be safe and efficient for the global hydrogen industry to succeed.

Provaris Energy's chief executive Martin Carolan further claimed that this concept could provide a cost-effective method of storing large quantities of hydrogen.
