Rio Tinto to charter two methanol dual-fuel bulk carriers

Mining company Rio Tinto has entered into an agreement to charter two methanol dual-fuel newbuild vessels from Japanese bulk operator NS United Kaiun Kaisha (NSU).

Each bulk carrier will have a capacity of 209,000 dwt and will be designed to operate on both methanol and conventional marine fuels. Delivery of the vessels is expected from 2028 onwards.
The newbuilds form part of NSU’s 2024 agreement with shipbuilders Nippon Shipyard, Imabari Shipbuilding, and Japan Marine United Corporation to construct methanol dual-fuel bulk carriers.
Further details, including the intended deployment of the vessels, have not been disclosed.
