Seco Marine’s underdeck hydrogen storage system gets BV nod
Classification Society Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) to marine engineering company Seco Marine for its compressed hydrogen storage systems.

The hydrogen storage systems are built to fit beneath the deck of vessels, BV said.
Seco Marine’s system aligns with BV’s criteria for hydrogen fuelled ships, it said. It powers fuel cells using compressed gaseous hydrogen stored in Type 4 tanks.
“Its design allows for integration into confined spaces located below deck, enabling new design opportunities for low-emission vessels,” BV said.
Hydrogen fuel cell systems are gaining popularity among shipowners as they look for technologies that can reduce conventional fuel use and enhance sustainability with hydrogen propulsion.
When installed on ships, these systems are expected to be effective in reducing CO2 emissions.
