Singapore’s 2024 bio-bunker and LNG sales reach all-time highs

January 16, 2025

Singapore sold approximately 2,400 mt/day of bio-bunkers in 2024, a significant increase from 1,400 mt/day in 2023, according to preliminary data from the port authority.

Changes in Singapore alternative fuel sales between 2023 and 2024:

  • Bio-VLSFO sales up from 518,000 mt to 780,000 mt
  • Bio-HSFO sales up from 5,600 mt to 89,000 mt
  • Bio-MGO sales up from 200 mt to 11,000 mt
  • LNG sales up from 111,000 mt to 464,000 mt
  • Methanol sales up from 300 mt to 1,600 mt

Singapore's bio-blended bunker sales surged by a significant 69% in 2024, reaching a record high of 883,000 mt, up from 524,000 mt in 2023.

Of this total, approximately 780,000 mt was VLSFO blended with a bio component (typically 24% in Singapore), while 89,000 mt was HSFO blended with a bio component.

LNG bunker sales skyrocketed by 318% in 2024, with an average of 1,300 mt/day sold, compared to around 300 mt/day in 2023 - marking a more than four-fold increase.

Methanol sales reached 1,600 mt in 2024, over five times the amount sold in 2023. In May, the methanol-fuelled tanker Stena Prosperous, operated by Proman, was bunkered with blended methanol at Singapore's Vopak Penjuru Terminal. The blended methanol was sold by Valenz, Proman’s marketing arm.

The Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) also announced the top five biofuel bunker suppliers for 2024. Unlike previous years, where rankings were based on volume, the 2024 list was presented in alphabetical order: Chevron Singapore, Maersk Oil Trading, Minerva Bunkering, SK Energy and Vitol Bunkers.
