SIPG Energy supplies bio-methanol to Wallenius newbuild

Shanghai-based bunker supplier SIPG Energy has supplied 2,800 mt of bio-methanol to a dual-fuel car carrier owned by Nordic shipping company Wallenius Wilhelmsen in Shanghai.

The bio-methanol stem was delivered to Arctic Tern by SIPG Energy's methanol bunker barge Hai Gang Zhi Yuan in a ship-to-ship bunkering operation.

Distribution firm World Fuel, which participated in the operation, said the bio-methanol was produced locally from municipal solid waste, with a certified carbon intensity of less than 25 gCO2e/MJ.

"The operation marked the first bunkering at Shanghai Port of green methanol produced locally in Shanghai for an international PCTC operator," World Fuel said.

SIPG Energy has expanded its ship-to-ship methanol bunkering service from container vessels to pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs), according to Zhang Da, the company's general manager.

"This bunkering sets a new record for the largest single SIMOPs [simultaneous operations] green methanol bunkering operation for a PCTC in China, marking another step in building Shanghai's position as a global green energy hub for international shipping," Da added.

Arctic Tern is the first of seven methanol-capable vessels on order for Wallenius Wilhelmsen. It will operate on the Asia-Europe trade under the company's EUKOR Car Carriers arm.
