Sohar Port to develop shore power facility
Sohar Port and Freezone has signed an agreement to set up a shore power facility at its container terminal.

The project is being developed in partnership with investment firm Moonrock and Danish electrical equipment supplier PowerCon.
Shore power, or cold ironing, enables vessels at berth to draw electricity directly from the onshore grid, allowing them to switch off their auxiliary engines. This helps reduce fuel use, lower greenhouse gas emissions, reduce air pollution and minimise noise around the port.
The port authority has not shared further details about the project, including its start or completion timeline.
