A diesel-electric hybrid vessel is fitted with a diesel engine driving an electric generator that feeds electric traction to a motor and helps propel it forward.
Called Urban Sprinter 1000, both these ferries have been designed by Dutch naval architect CoCo Yachts and will be built by Chinese ship maker YaGuang Technology. The duo will be classed by shipping classification society Bureau Veritas (BV).
The ferries will also be fitted with a battery pack and solar panels to provide additional power.
After completion, both vessels will be deployed between Central Pier and Cheung Chau Pier in Hong Kong and are expected to transport around four million passengers a year.
