e-NG or synthetic gas, is produced by combining green hydrogen from renewable electricity with biogenic or recycled CO2, TES said. It can be easily transported through existing LNG infrastructure or ships without requiring modification because the molecules are chemically identical.
Under the partnership, K Line and TES are exploring opportunities for collaboration, focusing on expanding e-NG partnerships, and enhancing various aspects of the value chain to increase the uptake of the fuel in maritime transport.
This partnership involves combining captured CO2 emissions with green hydrogen to produce e-NG, aiming to facilitate the transition to alternative bunker fuels for K Line's ships. The partnership is centered on securing e-NG from TES's green energy hub in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, to fulfill bunkering needs in Europe for K LINE and its subsidiaries.
Both parties will also review the regulatory environment related to low- and non-carbon fuels, carbon intensity, CO2 accounting, certification, and incentive programs. Through this assessment of supportive regulatory frameworks, K Line and TES aim to strengthen the advancement of e-NG projects.
Beyond business initiatives, technical collaboration is also planned, focusing on the operation and management of e-NG and liquefied CO2 carriers, as well as sharing information on CO2 capture and utilisation onboard vessels.
“By leveraging TES' expertise in green fuels and “K” LINE's commitment to decarbonise long-haul shipping, we aim to pioneer cleaner and more efficient maritime operations,” TES chief executive and founder Marco Alverà says.
