Dutch LNG supplier Titan Clean Fuels has delivered liquefied biomethane (LBM) to a Brittany Ferries vessel during its recent call at the Portsmouth International Port.

The fuel was delivered with Titan’s bunkering vessel Optimus to Brittany’s Saint Malo, a dual-fuel LNG ship which can also operate on electric battery power.

LNG-capable ships can use either pure LBM or LBM-LNG blends without requiring modifications.

Shipowners are gradually increasing LBM use due to its overcompliance with the FuelEU maritime regulation through mechanisms such as pooling.

The regulation allows shipowners to pool compliance across multiple vessels. Within such pools, ships that exceed EU greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets can transfer their surplus compliance to those vessels that fall short, helping participants balance emissions performance and avoid penalties.

Earlier this month, Spanish energy firm Molgas acquired Titan Clean Fuels to expand its LNG and LBM bunkering operations.
