The move follows trials and studies conducted at the Nagoya port. Those tests included biofuel deliveries through ship-to-ship (STS) transfers.
The biofuel is based on used cooking oil blended with heavy fuel oil, according to Toyota Tsusho. Used cooking oil is collected from employee cafeterias and other facilities across the Toyota group of companies, it added.
The company intends to scale up biofuel supplies in Nagoya and conduct similar trials at other Japanese ports.
Toyota Tsusho affirms biofuel will play a critical role in curbing shipping emissions in the near term, before the gradual shift to hydrogen and ammonia.
