Mitsubishi Shipbuilding will then develop ammonia fuel supply systems that will be compatible with WinGD's engines based on the vessel specifications.

The project is scheduled to start this year and will give both companies a competitive “first-mover advantage” for ammonia-powered marine engines, said Manabu Kawakado, head of Mitsubishi Shipbuilding's marine engineering division.

WinGD estimates that the vessels will be ready for operation in 2027.
