The Swiss engine maker has launched a new range of high-pressure LNG dual-fuel engines developed specifically for ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs).

The marine power company said the engines are designed keeping in mind the demanding operating profiles of ULCVs and to meet the scale, speed and load requirements of these vessels.

“For ultra-large container vessels choosing LNG as their pathway to net zero, this engine is the most cost-effective option,” said Benny Hilström, WinGD vice president for market development.

The first deliveries of these new engines are expected from 2028.

The engines will meet IMO Tier III emissions limits in both gas and diesel modes using a standard Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system.

The company said that with LNG expected to ensure compliance with FuelEU Maritime regulations well into the next decade, and uncertainty still surrounding future IMO requirements, LNG continues to represent a cost-competitive, lower-risk pathway to fleet decarbonisation.
