Both fuels were delivered separately to the Eco Levant by a single bunker vessel and blended onboard the container ship, according to the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

The ethanol was supplied by German firm Berkel AHK Alkoholhandel, according to the Global Ethanol Association. Bio-methanol supplier has not been disclosed.

X-Press Feeders said the trial is expected to provide greater fuel flexibility for its operations.

“Trials such as this allow us to better understand how different low-emission fuels can support operational and environmental objectives as the industry transitions towards more sustainable shipping,” said Shivendu Gadkar, head of fleet efficiency and performance at X-Press Feeders.

“This milestone demonstrates that Rotterdam is ready for a wide range of alternative fuels,” Matthijs van Doorn, commercial director at the Port of Rotterdam Authority said.
