The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), an association that represents the global cruise industry, has released its 2022 Global Cruise Industry Environmental Technologies and Practices Report.

The report states that 40% of the global cruise fleet is currently equipped with shore power systems, up from 20% last year.

Several global ports are ramping up necessary onshore power installations to connect vessels with shore power.

The Port of Amsterdam aims to connect cruise ships to shore power by 2025, and eventually mandate it by 2030. The nearby Port of Rotterdam has initiated similar plans to cut emissions from cruise ships in port. From 2030 onwards, the port aims to connect 90% of cruise ships arriving at its quays to shore power.

The European Parliament recently voted in favour of a FuelEU Maritime proposal that mandates the use of shore power for container and passenger vessels docked at European ports for more than two hours. If finally approved into law, this is expected to boost shore power installations further.
