They say the dual-fuel propulsion system will be able to operate on LNG and conventional fuels, and on electric power in a hybrid format.

Technology and engineering firm ABB and German engine manufacturer MAN Energy Solutions are developing a ship propulsion system that can work with MAN's dual-fuel engine.

This engine can already run on conventional bunker fuels, and on LNG which has around 25% lower carbon dioxide emissions than oil-based fuels. By adding hybrid electric propulsion as an option, the idea is that carbon emissions can be trimmed further - depending on whether the electricity is produced from renewable energy sources.

The electric propulsion system will be designed for LNG carriers, floating storage units (FSUs), and floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs).
