Scottish maritime company Caledonian Maritime Assets (CMAL) has ordered the seven fully electric ferries, with deliveries scheduled between late 2027 and early 2029, ABB said.
The 50-meter newbuilds will serve nine routes in the Clyde and Hebrides region on Scotland’s west coast, each transporting up to 200 passengers and 24 cars at a time, except for one vessel, which has capacity for 250 passengers and 16 cars, ABB said.
ABB will also provide shore power technology across multiple CMAL ferry terminals, beginning with Kennacraig and Port Askaig. Once operational, ABB’s shore power system will allow berthed vessels to connect to the local electrical grid, reducing emissions and noise pollution in port areas.
The project has been co-funded by the Scottish Government, boosting the UK’s broader push to decarbonise port operations and cut emissions from vessels at berth.
