ABS approves Hanwha Power’s battery-powered container ship design
The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has approved the concept design of a 1,700 TEU fully electric container ship developed by Hanwha Power, part of South Korean conglomerate Hanwha Group.

The vessel is designed to run entirely on electricity supplied by a 151 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system. Housed in containerised units, the batteries will provide the ship’s primary propulsion power, enabling zero direct carbon emissions during operation when supported by port-based charging infrastructure.
The containerised battery system can be handled and stowed similarly to conventional cargo containers, helping to maximise onboard space and cargo capacity. It also allows for battery replacement and scalable operations, offering a potential pathway to decarbonising short-sea and regional container shipping, Hanwha Power said.
Separately, Hanwha Power has completed the basic design of a 1,000 TEU battery-powered container vessel.
