The Freeport of Riga Authority, South Korean green methanol producer ECOMETHANOL and Latvian business consultancy firm AE Risinājumi have signed an agreement to develop a green methanol production facility at the Port of Riga.

The proposed facility will produce green methanol for export and use as an alternative marine fuel. The partners will also explore establishing a green fuel supply and bunkering hub at the port.

The project could open up new opportunities to supply vessels operating between Europe and Asia via the Northern Sea Route, while strengthening Riga’s position in the shift towards lower-emission maritime transport, the port authority said.

However, the companies have yet to disclose the facility’s planned production capacity or project timeline.
