Samsung Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean have each secured contracts to build four 174,000 cbm-capacity LNG dual-fuel LNG carriers, with an option for an additional vessel.

These ships are scheduled for delivery beginning 2028 and will be time chartered to ADNOC Group subsidiaries for a period of 20 years to support the increasing natural gas export volumes.

The addition of these new vessels will expand the company's LNG carrier fleet from 14 to at least 22 ships, ADNOC L&S says.

Each of these vessels will be equipped with a cargo conditioning system to reduce LNG evaporation during transit, a system to direct boil-off gases to the engines to improve fuel efficiency and lower fuel consumption, a real-time emissions monitoring system, and a cargo containment system to minimise methane emissions. A cargo containment system is designed to securely store and transport LNG onboard ships, ensuring safety and minimising emissions.

LNG has been gaining popularity among shipowners. The global LNG-fuelled fleet is currently made up of 557 vessels, with another 160 expected to join this year, classification society DNV data shows.

LNG can curb carbon dioxide emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels. But its methane emissions can be 36 times more potent as a greenhouse gas (GHG) compared to carbon dioxide over a century, according to a World Bank study.
