Amogy ammonia tech to drive Marco Polo Marine's offshore wind vessels

Installing ammonia-to-power unit on both existing and new offshore wind vessels, the Singapore Exchange-listed shipyard Marco Polo Marine says, “will allow them to operate with zero emissions.”

Amogy, a US-based start-up backed by e-commerce giant Amazon, has developed a zero-carbon power processing system that utilises ammonia for fuel.

The system feeds liquid ammonia stored onboard the vessel to a reactor system, filled with catalysts. The reactor converts ammonia to hydrogen via "ammonia cracking"- a process in which ammonia is broken down into nitrogen and hydrogen molecules.

Nitrogen is released in the air and the hydrogen is injected into onboard fuel cells that generate electricity for propulsion.

Amogy's technology can aid the maritime sector's decarbonisation efforts and accelerate the global switch to clean energy, says Marco Polo Marine’s chief executive Sean Lee.

At COP27 last November, the ammonia fuel start-up inked a collaboration agreement with Yara Clean, the clean ammonia production arm of Norwegian fertiliser giant Yara International. The pact will see Amogy sell ammonia-to-power systems to ships while Yara Clean provides green ammonia for bunkering.
