US-based ammonia technology company Amogy has signed a new agreement with South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) to manufacture its ammonia-to-power systems.

Under the deal, SHI will set up a dedicated facility in South Korea to produce and test these systems, starting with the units required for Amogy’s 2026 pilot project in Pohang, which aims to demonstrate an ammonia-powered system for power generation.

The agreement builds on a partnership formed in late 2024, when SHI invested in Amogy.

SHI will now serve as a contract manufacturer under a multi-year arrangement. Both sides will continue refining Amogy’s ammonia-to-power modules for deployment across land-based energy networks and maritime applications.

Amogy’s system works by using catalysts to crack ammonia on-site into hydrogen, which is then fed into a fuel cell or engine to produce carbon-free power. Its modular architecture allows easy scaling for a range of applications, from power generation to maritime propulsion.

To advance this technology, SHI will build testing methods and standards, develop protocols, design manufacturing equipment, and put process-management systems in place.

The company also plans to expand its ammonia demonstration center at the Geoje Shipyard by the end of this year, preparing it to manufacture and test Amogy’s systems at scale.
