AMPORTS contracts STAX to capture exhaust emissions in Benicia
US-based automotive service company AMPORTS has inked a deal with emission reduction technology firm STAX Engineering to capture and filter exhaust emissions from its auto carriers, which berth in the port of Benicia, US.

STAX offers both land- and barge-based emissions capture and control technology for shipping terminals and fleets.
The company’s exhaust capture system, compatible with all ships without modification, filters exhaust upon capture, removing 99% of particulate matter (PM) and 95% of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) before releasing purified gas, STAX claims.
“Addressing at-berth exhaust emissions is an opportunity for many vessel owners and operators, as well as the greater Benicia port community, to be environmentally responsible,” AMPORTS’ chief executive Vee Kachroo says.
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has expanded exhaust emission regulations, mandating oceangoing container ships, passenger ships and other vessels calling at California ports to reduce their emissions while at berth. CARB plans to include car carriers and tankers within the scope of this regulation from 2025.
In February, STAX launched the system for container ships in the Californian ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Oakland, and then expanded it to auto carriers in April. It currently operates in Benicia as well.
In March, Japanese shipping company NYK Line inked a deal with STAX to capture exhaust gases from its ships calling at ports in California, US.
