Germany’s Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) has rolled out safety and operational guidelines for ship-to-ship methanol and LNG bunkering at the Port of Waltershof.

The Port of Waltershof is a container terminal area within the Port of Hamburg.

HPA already permitted LNG and methanol bunkering for cruise ships in Hamburg, and the new guidance will now extend this to container vessels.

HPA has deemed supply infrastructure at the Burchardkai and Predöhlkai container terminals in Waltershof “bunker-ready” for ship-to-ship methanol and LNG operations. The authority will also begin issuing permits for methanol bunker suppliers.

“By offering methanol bunkering, the Port of Hamburg is strengthening its position as a Sustainable Energy Hub and contributing to the Green Corridor agreements concluded,” HPA said.

Hamburg has partnered with multiple port authorities across the world to develop separate green shipping corridors from Hamburg to Shanghai, Halifax, Singapore as well as across the Baltic Sea.

The move follows similar steps taken by the ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven earlier this year, signalling a broader shift among several German ports towards preparing for methanol as a marine fuel.
