It was attacked by Houthi militia forces 40 nautical miles (74 km) south of Yemen's Al Mukha, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported.
The Star Iris was fired at by two missiles, but no casualties or major damage to the vessel has been reported. UKMTO has confirmed that the vessel's crew is safe and that it is on track to reach its next port of call.
The vessel departed from Brazil on 12 January and is currently en route to Iran, maritime analytics provider MarineTraffic said.
The 76,500-dwt Star Iris is a bulk carrier flagged to the Marshall Islands and was built in 2006.
The Houthis' attack today has put an end to a week of calm in the region. Six days ago they targeted another ship belonging to Star Bulk. These two attacks are among the most recent in a long series of attacks since last November that have raised concerns about the safety of commercial shipping in the region.
