Antwerp-Bruges’ third-quarter bio-bunker sales triple over the year

November 14, 2025

Third-quarter biofuel sales at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges rose 33% from the previous quarter and have jumped more than 200% from a year earlier, as more ships burn low-carbon fuels to meet FuelEU Maritime compliance requirements.

At 56,000 mt, biofuel sales at Antwerp-Bruges are at their highest level since the port authority started reporting the numbers in Q3 2024.

The share of biofuels in total bunker sales have climbed to 3% in the third quarter of 2025, up from 1% in the same quarter last year.

The FuelEU Maritime regulation, effective January 2025, requires ships of 5000 gross tonnage and above calling at European ports to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The first compliance reports are due on 31 January 2026, and ships that fall short of the GHG-intensity targets will face significant fines.

In comparison, Rotterdam sold 201,000 mt biofuel in the third quarter of 2025, the port’s data showed last month. Antwerp’s biofuel volumes remain far lower, with the Dutch HBE subsidy scheme continuing to make Rotterdam a more attractive port for ships seeking to bunker biofuel.
