Belfast-based maritime design company Artemis Technologies, a spin-off from the Artemis Racing team, has said that its completely electric ferry will be deployed by the UK-based Condor Ferries in 2024.

The company claims that its EF-24 passenger ferry is completely electric and generates zero emissions during operation.

With thrust on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, electric propulsion technology has gained traction from the shipping industry.

Norwegian chemical company Yara International and technology company KONGSBERG jointly developed Yara Birkeland, a fully electric container ship. It was put into commercial operation earlier this year.

These small-scale fully electric vessels might not make a dent in reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions, but they provide much needed technical and operational experience for utilising the technology for bigger vessels.

Condor Ferries will commence a pilot program by operating the ferry between Northern Ireland’s Belfast and Bangor.
