The vessel, Margarita Salas, was built at Armón shipyard in Spain’s Gijón. The ferry is also equipped with a shore power system, which it can plug into when moored in a port.
Shore power can help to reduce a vessel's overall fuel consumption and lower emissions around the port area. But it does not have a dramatic impact on global shipping emissions.
Moreover, LNG-powered vessels are prone to methane slip which occurs when gaseous methane escapes into the atmosphere during storage, transfer or when the fuel is burned. According to the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), methane’s global warming potential is around 30 times greater than carbon dioxide (CO2).
