London-headquartered Anemoi Marine designed and supplied the rotor sails to Berge Bulk’s carrier, Berge Neblina. The rotor sails each stand 35 meters tall and five meters in diameter.
The rotor sails will enable Berge Neblina to save over 1,000 mt of fuel annually, Berge Bulk claims. The rotor sails were installed at the Yulian Shekou shipyard in China, following which the vessel set sail for Brazil.
The rotor sails, also known as Flettner rotors, are a type of wind-assisted propulsion technology (WAPS), which harnesses wind energy to provide lift to the vessel and aid propulsion. A Wärtsilä study revealed that Flettner rotor sails can reduce fuel consumption by up to 30%.
