Biokraft starts bio-LNG production at biogas plant in Sweden

August 28, 2023

Stockholm-based biogas producer Biokraft has delivered its first batch of bio-LNG from its new biomethane liquefaction unit located at the company's biogas plant in Södertörn, Sweden.

The first shipment comprised 34 mt of bio-LNG “to be used by trucks in northern Europe.”

Biokraft produces bio-LNG "by digesting collected food scraps and slaughterhouse waste from municipalities in Greater Stockholm” and the product is “100 percent fossil-free,” it claims.

The newly built liquefaction plant is located next to the digesters in Södertörn and converts biomethane into liquid through cooling. Digester is a sealed container or tank, where organic matter can be broken down to release biogas that can be used as an energy source.

The unit has an annual production capacity of 220 gigawatt hours (GWh), with a production capacity of 50 mt of bio-LNG per day – largest in the world, Biokraft claims.

The company expects its potential market for bio-LNG to significantly expand into “heavy road transport, shipping and industry.”

“Bio-LNG has a high energy content per unit volume and can be transported long distances at a reasonable cost to meet a strong demand in Northern Europe,” Biokraft adds.

The bio-LNG project, which has been partly funded by the Swedish government, commenced two years ago.

The project “will be in the commissioning phase for some months while production is scaled, and functions and delivery parameters are tested.” The company expects regular production to start by the end of this year.

“The launch of Stockholm bio-LNG is a major strategic milestone and strengthens our market position as one of Europe's leading bio-LNG producers in the Northern European market,” Biokraft’s chief executive Matti Vikkula said.
