BTG Bioliquids and NanosTech to build modular biofuel plant
Netherlands-based BTG Bioliquids (BTL) and Canadian tech company NanosTech Technology & Innovations (NanosTech) have signed an agreement to build a facility that will produce drop-in biofuels for industries such as shipping.

The project will integrate BTL’s pyrolysis technology—which breaks down organic materials by heating them in the absence of oxygen to generate biofuel—with NanosTech’s process that upgrades renewable oils into refinery-ready feedstocks without the use of external hydrogen. Together, the technologies will enable the production of drop-in biofuels.
The companies are assessing sites in Canada and Europe for a new 500 b/d modular biorefinery. Designed to be deployed close to feedstock sources, the system will cut transportation emissions while offering a modular facility that avoids reliance on large volumes of external hydrogen or large-scale refinery infrastructure.
“Second-generation biofuels, made from non-food biomass such as forestry residues and agricultural waste, offer a critical path to decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors like aviation, shipping, and heavy transport,” the joint statement said.
BTL and NanosTech are also engaging with industrial and government stakeholders to speed up deployment, aiming for completion by the end of this year.
