The system is based on Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor’s proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, delivering up to 70 kilowatts (kW) per unit and scalable to megawatt levels.

Designed for propulsion and carbon-free energy supply at sea, it suits sailboats, yachts, fishing boats, and shuttle boats, according to EODev.

The technology has been integrated in some maritime projects. Italian yacht company Bluegame used this system in its Hydrogen Support Vessels (HSVs).

Its first major project, PROMETEO, a 24-metre passenger vessel built by French marine engineering firm Green Navy, will carry 200 passengers in Brittany, BV claims.
