Shipping classification society Bureau Veritas says it will assess renewable hydrogen production facilities based on environmental, social, and governance (ESG), safety and greenhouse (GHG) emissions to provide a certificate.

The assessment will cover renewable energy that is used to power the electrolyser, onsite hydrogen storage, and a carbon footprint calculation.
The carbon footprint calculation will be based on a "Life Cycle Assessment" methodology that includes emissions from the electricity used and the water desalination process.
It says that assets must have a carbon footprint below 2 kg CO2 equivalent/kg of hydrogen produced to avail of the Bureau Veritas certification. Besides, a quarterly assessment will be needed to maintain the certificate.
The newly developed certification scheme will provide transparency for all stakeholders in the industry, Bureau Veritas’ global vice president, power & utilities Joerg Gmeinbauer says.
