To qualify for the certification, producers must prove that the ammonia is made using 100% green hydrogen as feedstock, according to Bureau Veritas (BV). The green hydrogen must be generated through electrolysis of water powered entirely by renewable energy sources.
“Additionally, the carbon intensity for the ammonia must be demonstrated and proven to be below 0.5 kg CO2eq/kg [kilogram of CO2-equivalent per kilogram],” BV adds.
Shanghai-headquartered Envision Energy’s facility is capable of producing 300,000 mt/year of green ammonia, using hydrogen produced with wind and solar energy inputs.
“By achieving Bureau Veritas certification at the initial phase, Envision Energy is demonstrating that even at industrial scale, renewable hydrogen and ammonia can be produced safely and sustainably in full compliance with international standards,” the company said in a statement.
Envision is also working toward securing China’s first International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus for liquid green ammonia, as well as a compliance statement under the Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) framework.
While specific details have not been disclosed, the company said at a 2024 event that it is open to supplying green ammonia from this plant for maritime use.
