The company aims to capture over 1 million mt/yr of CO₂ to produce renewable fuels, starting with Icelandic aluminium producer Norðurál, with plans to add more partners later.

Although the company has not specified the types or volume of renewable fuels it plans to produce, it is in talks with Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to source carbon capture technology for the project. German corporation Siemens Energy will also support the project, sharing expertise in hydrogen production and Power-to-X technology. This technology converts renewable electricity into other energy forms, such as hydrogen and synthetic fuels.

Icelandic fishing company Útgerðarfélag Reykjavíkur has already secured an agreement with Carbon Iceland to supply renewable fuel for its vessel, Guðmundur í Nesi RE-13.

Carbon Iceland’s carbon capture project was launched in October in Reykjavik, attended by Iceland's President, Madam Halla Tómasdóttir, and Minister of the Environment, Energy, and Climate, Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson.
