The two LNG-capable vessels, currently under construction at Germany's Meyer Werft shipyard, will feature air lubrication systems. The systems will be supplied by UK-based Silverstream Technologies.

These systems use air release units (ARUs) in the hull to generate air bubbles beneath the ship, creating a layer of air that significantly reduces friction. Silverstream claims the technology can cut fuel consumption by 5-10%.

The system, verified by Lloyd’s Register, maritime consultancy Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA), the University of Southampton, Carnival Corporation and energy company Shell, can be retrofitted in under 10 days, minimising operational disruptions.

The vessels are set for delivery in 2027 and 2028, bringing the number of Carnival Corporation ships equipped with air lubrication systems to 16.

Previously, the system achieved approximately 5% fuel and emissions savings on Carnival subsidiary Princess Cruises’ Diamond Princess ship, according to Silverstream.
