The Shanghai-listed energy transport unit of China Merchants Group has exercised an option for two 175,000-cbm LNG carriers to be built by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC). It has also signed a letter of intent with DSIC for up to four more carriers.
Each LNG carrier newbuild is expected to cost $200 million, according to a regulatory filing by CMES.
A total of four vessels, including the two from the new deal, will be delivered by the end of 2026. Delivery of the other two option vessels could be in the second half of 2026 and the first half of 2027.
