ClassNK greenlights MOL’s ammonia-powered gas carrier concept
Japanese classification society ClassNK has granted approval in principle (AiP) for an ammonia-powered large gas carrier designed by Japanese shipping firm Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL).
CONCEPT: Ammonia-powered large gas carrier. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines
The dual-fuel vessel is designed to run on ammonia as well as conventional fuels. It will feature larger cargo tanks than currently operational very large gas carriers (VLGCs) and ammonia carriers, according to MOL.
ClassNK’s approval in principle covers the basic vessel concept design and a detailed hazard identification study, which assesses the risks of ammonia toxicity and the countermeasures integrated into the design, MOL explained.
The design also meets entry restrictions at major Japanese power plants, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding said. It also allows for “compatibility between ammonia loading/unloading terminals, and cargo handling connections at a level almost equivalent to existing VLGCs,” the company added.
The vessel will be built by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and Namura Shipbuilding, but the delivery timeline has not been specified.
