“Interest in capturing CO2 from ships' exhaust gas is growing as a way to reduce GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions, and the development of onboard systems for capturing and storing CO2 is being undertaken,” ClassNK says.

The approval has been awarded to CSPI – a unit of China-based CSSC Power (Group) – after confirming the project's compliance with the requirements prescribed by ClassNK, the classification society says.

“Onboard CO2 capture is one of the potential solutions for pursuing decarbonisation, along with the transition to alternative fuels,” ClassNK’s corporate officer Masaki Matsunaga says.
