FSRUs are vessels that can transport, store and regasify ammonia. As the ammonia leaves the production area, it is transported to the floating vessel in a liquid state and stored on board. The ammonia is then heated onboard, converted into a gas and delivered onshore via a pipeline.
The FSRU concept was developed in collaboration with ship maker Mitsubishi Shipbuilding.
ClassNK was awarded the Approval in Principle (AiP) following a hazard identification study (HAZID). HAZID is a systematic assessment to identify and evaluate potential hazards associated with a project, aiming to prevent or mitigate risks to safety and the environment.
However, the company has not yet disclosed whether the FSRU will also be powered by ammonia.
The technology will enable large-scale storage and distribution of seaborne ammonia. Through this technology, MOL expects to contribute to developing the ammonia value chain as an alternative carbon-neutral fuel.
