As part of this initiative, CMA CGM will operate the electric barge in partnership with logistics and port operator Gemadept.

The battery-operated barge will be charged using renewable electricity sourced from a solar-powered charging station on the Gemalink terminal at the Cai Mep port, CMA CGM said earlier.

The barge will connect Nike’s inland drop-off location in Ho Chi Minh City with the Gemalink deep-sea terminal in Cai Mep, producing “zero direct greenhouse gas emissions” over an estimated 100-plus-mile round trip, the footwear company said.

The initiative “is expected to avoid approximately 778 tons of CO2 emissions annually [778 mt/year],” Nike said in a statement.
